“We got involved with Girls Inc. because, as the parents of two daughters, we believe every girl should have access to the same educational opportunities, support systems, and resources that help girls reach their full potential,” said Bill Newman. “Nearly 65% of the girls served by Girls Inc. are from households with an annual income at or below the poverty level. Providing free programs that empower girls to flourish academically, psychologically, and socially opens up a world of opportunity for them to succeed that they might not have had otherwise.”

“Our programs are open to all girls in the Greater Capital Region, and they are particularly vital for girls in Schenectady’s Hamilton Hill and Albany’s Arbor Hill and South End communities,” said Ashli Fragomeni executive director of Girls Inc. “Our centers are located in the heart of these downtown neighborhoods and want every girl to know we are here to support them.”

The Girls Inc. Experience currently offers 6 weeks of free summer programming for girls grades K-8 and free after-school programming in the fall and spring for girls grades K-12. Girls Inc. also provides a free 5-year STEM learning program called Eureka! for girls grades 8-12 that helps prepare them for the next steps in their education after high school.

“Our research-based programs incorporate topics like self-reliance and life skills, sports and physical activity, health and sexuality, personal and leadership development, and career and life planning,” said Fragomeni. “Our goal is to reach as many Capital Region girls as possible to help them discover and develop their inherent strengths and use them to fuel their futures.”

During the Girls Inc. Experience Challenge, the organization is taking its community outreach mobile on Wednesdays in an effort to give parents a chance to talk with Girls Inc. mentors and staff in a casual environment. From 1-3 pm on July 8th (this date was changed to July 10 from 12-2 pm due to thunderstorms), 15th, and 22nd (this date has been changed to August 19 from 1-3 pm due to thunderstorm warnings) staff will be in Schenectady’s Central Park near the playground. From 1-3 pm on July 29 and August 5 and 12 staff will be in Albany’s Washington Park near the playground.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has created unprecedented challenges for family households and for non-profits like ours,” said Fragomeni. “We’re thankful for the support from donors like Bill and Linda that not only allow us to expand our programming but keep it free of charge for Capital Region families.”

The Girls Inc. Experience Challenge runs for 6 weeks from July 6 – August 14, 2020. Gifts of $50 or more made during that time will be matched up to $10,000 by Bill and Linda Newman from Atrium Financial Group.
