“Growing up in a community with limited opportunities, I frequently felt confined. However, Girls Inc. offered me opportunities that allowed me to transcend those limitations and dream big.”
My name is Mekkah Bergeron, and I had the privilege of being part of Girls Inc. of the Greater Capital Region from the ages of 4 to 17. A few years back, I decided to give back by becoming a mentor on their Council of Women for Girls. I enjoyed it so much that I asked our CEO, Ashli, if I could join the board. Currently, I serve as the Board Secretary for Girls Inc. of the Greater Capital Region and I also volunteer with the Girls Inc. National Alumnae Association as a community builder.
When people ask me about what Girls Inc. means to me, I often find my words insufficient. Without Girls Inc., I truly cannot envision where I would be today. Growing up in a community with limited opportunities, I frequently felt confined. However, Girls Inc. offered me opportunities that allowed me to transcend those limitations and dream big.
I grew up in an environment plagued by gun violence, gangs, drugs, and teen pregnancies. I witnessed numerous individuals lose their lives merely for being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
For me, Girls Inc. was my safe place and I believe it continues to provide that comfort for young girls today.
Girls Inc. is so much more than just an after-school program; it creates a nurturing environment where girls can grow, learn, and thrive. The organization emphasizes building confidence, leadership skills, and cultivating a sense of community among girls. Girls Inc. opens doors that girls from Hamilton Hill or Arbour Hill may have never envisioned. It empowers girls to embrace their true selves, overcome challenges, and express their ideas to make a positive difference. Girls Inc. also educates young girls about women’s history that is often neglected in schools, encouraging them to become advocates from a young age. One quality I truly admire about Girls Inc. of the Greater Capital Region is the staff’s commitment to building relationships with each girl. They take the time to learn the names and stories of the girls, demonstrating genuine care for both the girls and their families.
As I reflect on my journey with Girls Inc., I am constantly reminded of the transformative power of community and mentorship. The influence of this organization extends far beyond the individual girls; it resonates throughout our entire community. Looking ahead, I am filled with hope. Girls Inc. is preparing young girls not just for today’s challenges, but to become the leaders of tomorrow.
