Katherine Lobbies for Change at the Federal Level

This summer, Girls Inc. of the Greater Capital Region’s very own Katherine had the honor of participating in the Girls Inc. National Teen Advocacy Council (TAC) trip to Washington, D.C. This incredible experience allowed her and other girls from across the country to lobby for important legislative changes at the federal level.

Katherine described the trip as “incredibly informative and really a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.” During their time in D.C., the group focused on lobbying for the Real Education and Access to Healthy Youth Act, a bill that seeks to improve sex education and access to resources for youth nationwide.

One of the highlights of the trip for Katherine was meeting with Congressman Paul Tonko’s staff to request his co-sponsorship of the bill. Much to their amazement, the congressman officially co-sponsored the bill that same day—a remarkable and nearly unprecedented achievement. Katherine shared her excitement, saying, “All of the adults said this was practically unheard of and that it was amazing!”

This experience gave Katherine and her fellow TAC members firsthand insight into the legislative process and the power of advocacy. The trip to Washington, D.C., not only empowered Katherine but also reminded her of the importance of youth voices in driving change. As part of the Girls Inc. mission, Katherine is helping to ensure that girls everywhere grow up strong, smart, and bold—equipped to make their mark on the world.

*The TAC is a leadership body of Girls Inc. girls (grades 10-12), who advise and inform our organization’s advocacy by sharing their life experiences and views about issues facing girls and youth in their schools and communities. Throughout this year-long leadership position, TAC members develop their advocacy skills from National staff and issue experts, represent Girls Inc. in different ways, and lead Girls Inc. advocacy efforts through activities such as social media campaigns and lobbying Congressional offices.

The 2022-2023 Teen Advocacy Council is composed of twelve inspiring girls passionate about advocacy representing ten Girls Inc. affiliates and all Girls Inc. regions across the U.S. and Canada.
