“Eureka! has given me knowledge about STEM, personal skills, and professional skills that I would’ve never had without participating.”
Hi, I’m Wanjiku, a second year (vet) participant of Eureka! The Eureka! Program is a part of Girls Inc. of the Greater Capital Region. This program is such an important part of who I am now and who I am becoming. It has exposed me to so many different people, who like me are interested in STEM and empowering teen girls. I have not yet finished this program, but I would like to share everything it has done for me with you. I found Eureka! through attending Girls Inc. summer camp as an elementary school student. One of the counselors recommended that I apply for it. A few years later when middle school came, I applied and got in! Thus, for the last two years I have been attending Eureka! summer camp and participating in events during the school year.
Without Eureka! I would never get to experience the number of activities and events I have had in the past two years. Some events include talking with college professors about their various subjects, performing professionally guided experiments in labs, visiting a family courthouse, and even going to a NYC museum! These experiences have all led me to meet many amazing, diverse people who have all helped me broaden my horizon of the STEM field. As a child of African immigrants education has always been an important factor in my life. Eureka! has given me knowledge about STEM, personal skills, and professional skills that I would’ve never had without participating. However, for me the Eureka! program isn’t just about showing girls opportunities in STEM, but teaching girls to become the women leading in STEM. Eureka! has taught me that there are so many careers and opportunities out there, I just have to find my own path.
