Girls Inc. Unveils AT&T Connected Learning Center at Schenectady Location
Schenectady, NY – [October 30, 2024]: Girls Inc. of the Greater Capital Region is excited to announce
the opening of a new Connected Learning Center (CLC) at its Schenectady location, made possible by a
generous $50,000 donation from AT&T. This center will equip K-5 girls in the after-school program with
state-of-the-art technology, including computers and digital learning tools, aimed at bridging the digital
divide and fostering a tech-forward learning environment.
This initiative is part of AT&T’s ongoing commitment to promoting digital literacy and providing
underserved communities with the tools they need to succeed in today’s digital world. The Connected
Learning Center will serve as a hub for digital education, where young girls can explore STEM activities,
work on school projects, and develop critical 21st-century skills.
Congressman Paul D. Tonko (NY-20) shared his excitement for this impactful initiative, stating,
“Throughout my time in Congress, I’ve been committed to ensuring that all of our nation’s students have
access to the tools they need to grow and thrive in the digital age. That’s why today, I’m thrilled to join
Girls Inc. of the Greater Capital Region to celebrate the grand opening of their Connected Learning
Center—a new partnership with AT&T that will help close the digital divide and deliver essential
technological resources to those who need them most. This initiative is a major step forward for girls
across our Capital Region, and I’m eager to see how this new facility will connect our students with the
digital learning opportunities they need to succeed.”
“We are thrilled to partner with AT&T in this transformative effort to expand digital learning for our
girls,” said Ashli Fragomeni, CEO of Girls Inc. of the Greater Capital Region. “Access to technology is
vital for young students, and this new space will give them the opportunity to explore, learn, and grow in
a safe and supportive environment.”
This partnership marks a significant step in equipping our girls with the resources they need to thrive in
an increasingly digital world. With the support of organizations like AT&T, Girls Inc. remains dedicated
to closing the digital divide for our community’s youth.
“At AT&T, we believe every student deserves an opportunity to make their dreams a reality,” said John
Emra, President – AT&T Atlantic Region. “Our investment in the AT&T Connected Learning Center at
Girls Inc. of the Greater Capital Region directly reflects our commitment to getting more kids connected
and making an impact in the communities we serve. The center will give Schenectady girls access to
technology, internet connectivity, educational and mentoring resources to help them succeed in digital
school and job environments. We’re grateful for the opportunity to support these remarkable girls and for
the life-changing work done across the region by everyone at Girls Inc.”
The Connected Learning Center in Schenectady offers free access to digital resources, including computer
stations, Wi-Fi, and other connected technology. It also provides educational resources such as The
Achievery, a free digital learning platform by AT&T, and free digital literacy courses in partnership with
the Public Library Association. In New York, approximately 11% of households lack access to the
internet or connected devices necessary to participate fully in the online world. This Connected Learning
Center will help bridge that gap by specifically serving Girls Inc. students in grades K-5, giving younger
students their own dedicated space to work, play, and engage with technology.
“Today’s groundbreaking of the new Connected Learning Center is an investment in our youth and in the
future of Schenectady,” said Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara. “This partnership between AT&T and
Girls Inc. ensures that more of our young people have access to the essential digital tools they need to
succeed. By bridging the digital divide, we’re creating opportunities for kids to learn, grow, and prepare
for the jobs of tomorrow—right here in their own community. Together, we’re shaping a brighter future
for everyone.”
In addition to AT&T’s support, Girls Inc. of the Greater Capital Region recently completed renovations on
two other rooms in the Schenectady location. Thanks to funding from the Capital Region Chamber’s
Leadership Capital Region class earlier this year, the Zen Den and Teen Tech Room were also renovated,
enhancing our ability to provide valuable resources to girls of all ages. We are deeply grateful to both
AT&T and the Chamber for their generosity and commitment to helping us create spaces that empower
and inspire the next generation of leaders.
“Investments like these allow us to continue updating our facilities to ensure that all of our girls, from
kindergarten through high school, have the tools and support they need to succeed,” added Ashli
Fragomeni. “We are committed to expanding our ability to serve more girls with improved resources.”
The Connected Learning Center officially opened its doors during a press conference held earlier today at
Girls Inc.’s Schenectady office on October 30, 2024.
