A Celebration for the Girls

Every year, from September to May, we open our doors in Albany and Schenectady to girls from around the Capital Region. We provide free after-school opportunities, in a safe, fun, nurturing environment. During these 8 months, we experience some amazing things…

Positive behavior
Higher levels of self-esteem
More interest in school
The ability to be a girl and just have fun!
And so much more…

At the end of the program year, we hold an event, Girls Night Out,  to celebrate our Capital Region Girls. Staff, parents, community members, and supporters gather to enjoy dinner and recognize their achievements.

Girl of the Year – Schenectady

The Gladys Jameson Girl of the Year Award for 2018 was presented to Oluwatosin Osipitan.

Tosin is 11 and in the 6th grade at Oneida Middle School. Tosin recently moved from Nigeria. She started the year off very shy both here and at her school. She struggled to connect with people because of a small language barrier, and the fact that she’s new to the country. Since her first day at Girls Inc., Tosin has been AMAZING. She leads by example, does her work, exudes respect and empathy for her peers and teachers, always tries, and supports other girls. Tosin makes sure to give everything her all, even though her circumstances would’ve made it understandable for her to sit in the background. Tosin has formed genuine friendships at Girls Inc. and has also given each staff member something to look forward to each day. Her kind, positive energy is exactly what is needed!

Girl of the Year – Albany

The Winifred Downey Girl of the Year Award for 2018 was presented to Nyasia Surgick.

Nyasia, age 12, is consistently thoughtful, helpful and respectful. At age 6, Nyasia came to Girls Inc. one day wearing a “Girls Can Change The World” shirt, and she is doing just that. Nyasia is intelligent, funny, and a positive role model for our younger members. She is not afraid to speak up if she sees someone doing something that they shouldn’t. She is more concerned with doing the right thing than “looking cool”. This earned Nyasia a great deal of respect in her peer group and they voted her “Girls Inc. President” last year. She is always willing to lend a hand and help someone in need. Congratulations to this amazing future leader!
